SCANDIUM 21 - FULL BIOGRAPHY
Scandium 21 is an American hard rock and metal band from Norfolk, Virginia. The band formed in early 2011 by founding members Dave Abson (rhythm guitar), Bill Martin (drums) & Mary Martin (vocals). Abson, Martin & Martin all hailed from different music backgrounds and original bands. Finding common ground with music influences, experience, musicianship, writing & recording they quickly got to work starting the new band. “Chris” Harrah (lead guitar) joined the band in 2011 along with a rotation of bass players. Scandium 21 was focused on writing original rock, hard rock and traditional heavy metal. Musicianship, lyrics, songwriting, original sound & music remained the number priority for the band while they wrote all the songs for the first self-titled LP album War of The Dog. Released by Rare Metal Records on May 21, 2016. The album features 11 tracks with a variety of music and songs such as the clean, melodic rock of “Break of Dawn” & “2 A.M”. The punk rock & metal influenced “Self Destruction”, “You’ll See” and “Save the Past”. Finally, the classic metal sounds of “Fantasies”, “War of the Dog”, “Colors of Abuse” & “Nothing to Lose”. The album continues to gain attention and popularity from domestic and international fans. In late 2016, Chris Harrah departed Scandium 21 to persue his music career in Nashville, TN where he remains today playing with some of the biggest and best talent in the world. In 2017 Scandium 21 & Rare Metal Records released a cover version of the ZZ Top hit song “Gimme All Your Lovin”. The album cover features the 3 founding members of the band. The years 2017 – 2021 the founding members of Scandium 21 teamed up with a local musician David B. Elmore with a potential side project. The project became David B. Elmore & The Hundredaires. The band featured Dave Elmore (lead guitar and vocals), Dave Abson (rhythm guitar), Bill Martin (drums), Mary Martin (lead & backing vocals), with a rotation of bass players. Dave Elmore had been working on writing many original songs and he shared the same rock, hard rock and metal influences. The band agreed to move forward with recording a new album. Dedicated to creating a new Artist and music all the band members worked hard in and out of the studio. Practicing, recording, refining and producing a one of a kind music arrangements for the album. On October 31st, 2018 the EP album “Up From The Ashes” was released by Rare Metal Records. Featuring 8 masterfully written tracks with a wide variety of music influences including blues/rock “Mojo Blues”, the catchy rock & roll tune “Sorry Momma”, classic metal “I Rise”, politically charged “Political Demise” and the most popular heavy metal song “Dirt Nap”. In 2021, Scandium 21 returned to the music scene with live performances featuring Dave Elmore (lead guitar) and interim bass players. Additionally, two singles were written and released by Elmore, Abson, Martin & Martin -"Inner Demons" and "Diamond Eyes" were two very heavy outstanding singles released under the David B. Elmore artist name. Scandium 21 has integrated the original music of David B. Elmore & The Hundredaires into all live Scandium 21 shows. This new transition produced a very engaging and extremely well received wide variety of high energy rock and metal music for fans. Welcome 2024 - Scandium 21 has remained focused on studio work, new music releases and live performances locally and regionally. Scandium 21 continues it's commitment to writing, recording, arranging, producing the best original music. Meticulous, detailed and artistic crafting of our music is the key element of Scandium 21.
Interesting Facts about Scandium (SC): Rare Earth Element, silver in color and is considered a “Transition Metal". Metallic Scandium was first produced in 1937 and the first pound of pure Scandium was produced in 1960. Scandium is very expensive for widespread use due the extraordinary cost of $122,500 per pound. Alloys of Scandium and Aluminum are used in manufacturing such as baseball bats, bicycle frames, lacrosse sticks, aircraft parts and custom firearms (S&W 1911SC). How did the band get the name? One of the band member’s friends called one evening and told him about a new metal he was working with at the factory. The friend worked at a firearm manufacturing Custom Shop and explained the new metal called Scandium. He thought the metal was so rare & awesome that someone should start metal band named “Scandium”. After much consideration and research the name Scandium 21 was chosen and the rest is history.
